A couple of years ago, I authored a story published as part of a collective book. "The Truth About You" allowed me to explore my inner self and learn some important lessons as I was transitioning from my 25 years of corporate life into becoming an entrepreneur, a very scary and challenging moment.
One of the key lessons I learned was about the power of assertive communication.
It's not just about speaking up but doing so in a way that respects both yourself and others.
I remember writing, "Finding my voice was like discovering a new strength within myself. Each time I spoke up, I felt more in tune with who I really was." This journey of finding and using my voice was transformative. I also reflected, "The real breakthrough came when I realized that being assertive didn’t mean being aggressive. It meant being clear, honest, and respectful."
Here are the main lessons I share about assertive communication:
Know Your Worth: Recognize that your thoughts and opinions are valuable. When you understand your worth, it becomes easier to express your needs and desires confidently.
Be Clear and Direct: Avoid beating around the bush. State your message clearly and directly, but also respectfully. Clarity prevents misunderstandings and ensures that your message is received as intended.
Practice Active Listening: Assertive communication isn’t just about speaking; it’s also about listening. Show respect for others by actively listening to their perspectives before responding.
Use "I" Statements: Frame your messages with "I" statements to express how you feel and what you need without sounding accusatory. For example, say "I feel concerned when deadlines are missed" instead of "You never meet deadlines."
Stay Calm and Composed: Maintain a calm and composed demeanor, even when discussing difficult topics. Keeping your emotions in check helps you communicate more effectively and prevents escalation.
Set Boundaries: Clearly define your boundaries and be consistent in upholding them. This not only protects your well-being but also teaches others how to interact with you respectfully.
My transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship taught me the importance of assertive communication in both personal and professional realms. It has empowered me to navigate challenges with confidence and clarity.
